Our Young Carer Champion - Miss Thomson

Is Your Child a Young Carer? Are you a Young Carer?

A young carer is a child or young person under 18 who provides regular and ongoing care and emotional support to a family member. The family member may be ill, disabled, or has a mental health problem or an addiction. (Generally helping out around the house and doing jobs doesn’t mean that you're a young carer.)

A young carer does much more, including:

  • shopping, cooking, cleaning, washing, collecting prescriptions
  • helping with bathing, dressing, and taking medication
  • emotional support, such as talking to someone who is distressed or helping someone to communicate
  • looking after younger siblings
  • managing the family budget

Well - being is a real focus at Palfrey Junior School, we like to give the children lots of opportunities to talk about their thoughts and feelings.  We currently run: 1:1  mentoring/ well - being sessions,  group mentoring and well - being sessions, nurture groups/social clubs and  a Young carers group would be a new addition we could offer.

If you think your child is a young carer we would really like to know so that we can offer them help and support in school and to your whole family.

Our school's Young Carer Champion is Miss Thomson so please get in touch. You can either email support@palfrey-j.walsall.sch.uk and she will get back to you to organise time for a chat, pop into reception and see if she is free or speak to her on the gate in a morning.
